The SCVCC has a history of being a watchdog organization for the Village of Tubac and the surrounding area. It relies on the diligence of its Board of Directors and District Representatives, as well as the collective help of community members, to ensure that Tubac and the seven districts that the council represents comply with the County Comprehensive Plan and remain the kind of place where we all choose to live.
There are currently two “Standing Committees” sponsored by the SCVCC, the Tubac Area Planning Committee and The Tubac Dark Skies Committee.
.
Tubac Area Planning Committee:
The Tubac Area Planning Committee was established to address concerns that the previous Santa Cruz County Comprehensive Plans did not adequately reflect Tubac’s unique needs and priorities. The committee studied the plans and comprised a list of concerns and suggested solutions or goals meant to influence future plans.
Committee efforts over the years have included:
* Walkability initiatives within Tubac Village
* Ecotourism promotion
* Development standards and ranchland preservation
* Planning advocacy
* Support for trail development, including the Ochoa Trail project
Tubac Dark Sky Committee:
The Tubac Dark Sky Committee, now The Tubac Dark Sky Association, was formed to help Tubac and the surrounding area attain the designation of an “International Dark Sky Community". In September 2024, this designation was obtained making our community among 9 in Arizona and 64 in the whole world. But the work continues as each year we need to go through a process that verifies that we are still a “Dark Sky Community”. For more information, please see our web page on this site.
If you are interested in joining either of these committees, please contact us through our website and we will pass your name along to committee chairs.
